April 20, 2021 My Grandfather in his 81st year took his own life with a firearm. What the entire family did not know at the time was that he had spoke to his family doctor several times about assisted suicide. His doctor brushed it off as depression and did what they all do prescribed some pills. It sickened me to find this out only after the devastation of his death. It still feels like we were robbed of peaceful final farewell. What we knew and the doctor should have known was that my grandfather had suffered a stroke a number of years prior which made it difficult for him to speak at all. Despite the stroke he had remained as active as he could. He did all the yard work and even cut his own fire wood. He had a passion for wood crafts and building almost anything he could imagine. Once his fine motor skills deteriorated he gave up.Winter of 2020/2021 he would get up every morning to sleep the day away in his rocking chair. It was later revealed that my grandmother did have plans on putting him into a home. Understanding everything I do now I just wished when he put in the effort to express his desires to his doctor that someone would have been there who cared enough to listen.
