Hi Pamela, I listened to your chat with Candace Sampson, I have been meaning to reach out to you for sometime now regarding your advocacy to end GBV.
During the pandemic, when violence against women and children were skyrocketing, I was happily living in my bubble with my husband and son. In May 2020, my sister called me from a woman's shelter - she had a concussion, a torn rotator cuff and a broken wrist and she had filed a complaint against her former fiancé for domestic violence abuse.
Later that summer on the evening of July 28th 2020 my sister-in-law, left her home to take a walk in her neighbourhood. She was discovered the next morning, half naked in a creek bed, near death, beaten beyond recognition.
Needless to say these crimes had a significant impact on my family and myself. Having had my own experiences with violence and sexual assault I was to be blunt, fucking tired of this shit. Since that time I have spend hours researching, writing and attempting to draw attention to the fact that all this violence directed at women is 100% preventable. That the systems we have are insufficient to the task. This past year I sat through the proceedings for the perpetrator (who was 21 years old at the time) and bumped up against the ugly reality that our justice system serves the public interest but not the victim.
